“Give me a piece of your skin, & I’ll give you a piece of my soul.” -Jay Freestyle
Freehand tattoo artist, Jay Freestyle, was born to conservative Chinese parents in Johannesburg, South Africa. The absence of a creative scene in his hometown inspired him to move to Amsterdam at 19. He’s been making an international name for himself ever since.
He describes his style as watercolor, but in reality, it’s evident that he incorporates many of the styles he’s absorbed over the years. Like so many truly gifted people, he’s entirely self taught, which probably has a lot to do with the unpredictable turns his works take. He makes up his designs as he goes along, a process that certainly won’t suit everyone. That’s a big, fat leap of faith on the part of both the artist and the canvas.
“Not everyone wants my style. Usually from the first couple of minutes of talking to someone, I can see if they want ‘my style’ or if they want me to do something realistic or traditional.”
According to his website, he comes to New York often and does guest artist spots in a few high-profile tattoo shops. I’m really tempted. I don’t want anything with a face, but I would love one of his abstract pieces.
Hope you enjoy his work as much as I do.

That’s some gorgeous work.
I have a few tattoos, mostly illustrations. Kelly Doty is one of my favorite artists — along with her immense talent, she has an unusual sense of humor that comes through in her work.
I’d love a watercolor tattoo — I just don’t have room. Gotta keep some skin blank for the office job. 🙂

Wow! I hadn’t heard of Kelly Doty, so I just looked her up. Fascinating stuff! I especially love the Gil Elvgren Pinup Zombie (http://www.zhippo.com/cfscripts/imageWindow.cfm?image=http://galleryoftattoosnow.com/TurnpikeTattooHOSTED/images/gallery/elvgrin-zombie-pinup-tattoo-kelly-doty-101311.jpg&imageWidth=621&imageHeight=800&imageAlt=Gil%20Elvgren%20Pinup%20Zombified%20tattoo&title=Gil%20Elvgren%20Pinup%20Zombified%20tattoo).
Thanks for turning me onto her! I too need to keep the lower extremities, etc. clear for the office job. I’m fine with that. I’d rather keep putting them where I don’t see them every day. It cuts down on the danger that I’ll get tired of them!

Check out her Instagram when you get time — it’s awesomeness upon awesomeness.
And yeah, I have one botched tattoo that I hate — I’ve had it for 20 years. It’s on the back of my shoulder, and I never see it, so I’m not too worried about it. 🙂

I had a crappy one – my first, actually – on the back of my neck which I had covered up 15 years ago. Now the coverup is so old, the ugly original is starting to show through. Time for a refresh!

This is so cool! I would trust him with my body as his canvas. I shared this on Facebook. One of my brothers and one of my sisters have great tattoos. I got my first in 1995. It was a simple black tattoo on my calf. The reason I got it was I was going to have a surgery that I only had a 50% chance of recovery and I was not going to be buried without having a tattoo. Silly, huh? I got my second tat for my birthday in 1999, a scorpion just above my left breast. I have a great design for my next one but I need to find an artist I trust.
Great OBT for today!

I don’t think it’s silly at all. I love it! Thanks again for the re-post. I can use all the help I can get.

The black tattoo was an inverted black triangle.

I’m truly taking pleasure in the design and layout of your blog.
It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more
often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme?
Outstanding work!

How kind of you to say! Thank you! I did not hire anyone. I started with my banner picture, then played with different themes until I found one that looked right. The design was more dumb luck than anything else. I do pay a lot of attention to the layout of my posts. It took me a little while to find the right balance between big- and small-screen-friendly format. Now it’s pretty much all formulaic. Posting has gotten much quicker since I figured out photo sized and positions.
Anyway, I’m really gratified to hear that my efforts are paying off. Thanks again!
