Singapore artist Izziyana (“Izzi”) Suhaimi adds embroidery to her drawings to create textural images that will stick with you. Most are portraits, and the embroidery represents embellishments to the clothing or head-wear of the subjects. What I realized looking at these compelling images is that were real people wearing these accessories on Project Runway, for example, I’d wake my wife up yelling at the TV with my noisy criticism of the flowery, fussy accessories. However, as part of the portraits, I don’t mind the colorful additions. In fact, I applaud them. They add a layer of vulnerability and sweetness to the already very good drawings that the sketches alone would lack.
Fashionable or not, these works of art are lovely and interesting. Will I start wearing flowered collars and woolly hats? No. But I would be proud to hang these on my wall.
