What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

“Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.”

Restoration Hardware consistently has the most delicious, the most desirable, the most needful things, and each marvelous item comes complete with a shocking price tag. On the rare occasions when I go in the store (as opposed to fogging up their windows), I wander about, mouth agape, gawking at every single gadget and gizmo like I’ve just arrived in town with the manure money. (No offense to those of you with manure-related income. I hear it’s the big thing these days.)

But I digress. These gorgeous pieces are all part of wonderfully-talented Danish designer Søren Rose’s line of outdoor furniture for Those Brilliant, Overpriced Bastards. Just to illustrate my point, I’ve included not just links to these glorious items, but also their bat-shit crazy prices.

2020 EPILOGUE: This post went up six years ago, but it gets multiple hits every day. I don’t pretend to understand why, but I’m nonetheless grateful for the traffic. If you’re interested in Restoration Hardware’s fantasy-priced outdoor furniture, go check out the Marbella Teak Collection. The price tags are even more appalling (by a fair margin, actually), and it’s nearly as beautiful as this long-discontinued collection. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for Søren Rose’s wonderful work, go check out his website. He is still out there making beautiful things! And if anyone wants to tell me why it gets clicks every day, I’d love to know. Seriously. Please tell me. It’s driving me nuts. Every day? WTF?

2023 EPILOGUE TO THE EPILOGUE: Yep, three years after my first epilogue, I’m still getting hits every day. I have been knocking myself out to post on the daily for nine years, but this remains my most popular post. Should I be thrilled? Should I be bummed? Should I limit myself to writing about unattainable furniture? Should I just stop writing and repost this one every day? So many questions…

  1. What, you don’t think an outdoor couch that gets rained on, bird crap on, etc is worth almost $4K? Sheesh. 🙂 I LOVE Restoration Hardware – I even own a few of their (much less expensive) pieces, but they’re inside the house. In a room we use DAILY. Without the opportunity for pigeon poop.

  2. I may rival the craziness of their prices. The only person in our family on whom we have splurged with RH furnishings is too damned young to appreciate it (they sell beautiful nursery digs too and I wanted something that would last until he left home). Oh, and the dog. Her (not quite 16 lb) highness has appropriated this: http://www.rhbabyandchild.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=rhbc_prod381075&categoryId=rhbc_cat377264 – which naturally was also bought for the little person. I want a brain transplant.

  4. I browse their website from time to time, but certainly can’t afford the furniture. One day!

  8. Loved the post and believe me, even if they GAVE the furniture to me, it wouldn’t look the same, seeing as how I don’t live right next to the ocean. Sigh. Besides, Chicago weather sucks, maybe that’s the reason they closed all their stores in this area.

  9. I might have to show these to my hubby, perhaps he could whip up the furniture while I dash to the sewing machine and whip up the cushions. Those prices are bonkers.

  10. I am currently making these with redwood. The price is really steep. The cushions are turning out to be more affordable at RH, believe it or not. Yikes! Thank you.
