I am a little obsessed with jellyfish. Always have been. Got stung rather badly once as a child, but that affected my fascination not at all. It’s like I have jellyfish Stockholm Syndrome.
We are avid warm-weather kayakers, and we live in a place that is overrun a number of times during each season with moon jellyfish, lion’s mane, sea nettle, and my favorite, the bioluminescent comb jellies. While everyone else is on shore, drinking and grumbling about how they can’t go in the water, I’m out in the kayak (also drinking), talking to the jellies. (If you decide to try this yourself, just bring along a spray bottle of white vinegar for stings. Works like a charm!)
When I come across photos of jellyfish, it takes everything in me not to post them as that day’s OBT. Really. I struggle. But I don’t want to keep them all to myself either. So I’ve decided to pile them all into this one glorious, JF-filled post. Lucky you!
By the way, it’s not just me. Even Valentino used them as the inspiration for his Fall 2010 collection, and I’m sure he’s not the first to do so.
And I just learned that fellow blogger and artist, Shawn Carney, who writes the blog DriftAndBurn, has been working on jellyfish-inspired art! Take a look at her blog here.

Aren’t they? I always said if I won the lottery, the frivolous thing I’d spend money on would be a jellyfish tank. A big one!

They are pretty, but this is why I steer clear of water! Did you see this post about jellyfish (the ones he photographed are in not quite such a beautiful state):

What an interesting article! Those blue ones are gorgeous, but pretty or not, anything in those numbers is going to mean trouble. So disturbing.

They are pretty. Is it several different kinds or dot they change shape when they swim?

Many different kinds, in fact.

So Valentino made the Fashion / Jellyfish comparioson – or did you, Donna? I admit it made me smile. Your pictures of other jellyfishes are really beautiful (and I learned a new English word: jellyfish, a word that really fits to these animals). I don’t like them nonetheless (the jellyfishes), particular I dislike the lion’s mane jellyfish although beautiful.
Great entry, Donna!

Thank you very much! Valentino made the jellyfish connection. I just reposted, but aren’t they beautiful?

Oh yes, they are beautiful! Although I like the Dresses more than the jellyfishes 🙂

Thanks for directing me to this blog post, Donna. I LOVE all the jellyfish photos. I’m not surprised they’ve inspired fashion with their undulating curves and sinuous, elegant lines.

They really are my favorite creatures. If angels exist, in my head, they look like this.
