Set to “Plastic Bag Theme” from the “American Beauty” soundtrack by Thomas Newman (which I think is one of the most haunting pieces of music of the 20th century), digital filmmaker Jacob T. Swinney‘s short film, First and Final Frames is absolutely consuming me today. Swinney brilliantly edited together the first and last few frames of 55 iconic American movies. The frames are shown side by side, and the resulting compilation is absolutely hypnotic.
I’ve listed the movies in order below the video, but I think it’s more fun to watch first and see how many you can name. I was shocked at how few I got right. Clearly, I need a Netflix day to brush up!

That was pretty neat. Make me think of how time moves circularly rather than linearly at times…

Agreed. It reminded me of an assignment I had in school. The teacher told us to read only the first paragraph and the last paragraph of a book, then write a report on what we thought the book was about. Interesting!

The editing in this is amazing. It could really serve as a way to advertise these movies; I felt like I immediately had to turn on netflix and start watching a few of them. Really loved this post, thanks for sharing!

I hope they’re getting some kind of click credit! Glad you liked it. It’s funny how something so simple could be so compelling.

What a great share! I could watch that 100 times over and it made me wonder about other films too.

That’s great! I think the editor should be collecting money from Netflix.
