Building Blocks of (Plastic) Creation

plastimake 1Plastimake sounds like something you would have to pick up after your toy dog.

Non-toxic, biodegradable, clean, easy, AND fast, this stuff sounds as fictional, as futuristic as the Cicrert, except Plastimake is actually available for purchase! It might even replace Brookstone’s Kinetic Sand as my favorite toy (since that stuff is roughly as toxic as yellowcake uranium).

The stuff comes in hard white plastic pellets, but it becomes pliable and transparent at 140°F,  so you can work it with your bare hands while it’s still soft. When it cools, it forms (relatively) hard white plastic in whatever shape you’ve worked it. But here’s the kicker: you can always melt it again and make it into something else. Plastimake can be heated and reworked and cooled as many times as you like. That’s amazing. There’s no waste!

“All you need to get started is an idea, a bowl of hot water and your hands.”

People have been making some pretty trippy things with it, including costumes, toys, jewelry, and tools. They’ve been making repairs and improvements to everyday objects, and even invented things you didn’t know you need.

They'd make pretty respectable Spock ears, too!

Fairy ear wings. This of course makes me think Plastimake would make some pretty respectable Spock ears, too!

This post is starting to be more about Simon Scheuerle than about Plastimake! Hilariously, this character is called “Manilow.”

  3. How clever some of those things are. Who would have thought you could make a bra with it?!

  4. The outlet covers with holders for electronic devices are such a great idea. This toy sounds great.

    • I’ve ordered the stuff, and while I wait, I’m thinking about what great thing I want to make first. So far, I’ve come up with exactly nothing, but I did dream last night that I snuck into a museum and put Plastimake boobs on a nude male statue. So I think it’s safe to say that whatever I make will be very, very mature and thoughtful.

      • You’ve got a creative mind and spirit. I am sure once you have the material in your hand you will find some great things to create. The plastic boobs on a statue sounds like a great idea–kind of like a scene from a movie when a bunch of super conservative types enter the museum and start to gasp and faint.

  5. It all looks so cool! I wonder where I can buy it or if I can make it myself. That would be so fun either way though 🙂

  6. I want! (If only to make the Princess Leia costume – I do need something to wear to the midnight showing, after all!).
