The 30-Second Face

I held off on writing about this technology because it seemed too good to be true. I assumed it was an April Fools Day prank, but three plus weeks later, Foreo is still keeping a straight face and even giving interviews, so I think it’s safe to assume it’s real.

This is MODA by Foreo, a 3D printer for your face. That’s right, I said FOR YOUR FACE. Seriously. Watch this:

“The makeup is applied in three steps, using 2,000 very fine nozzles which are able to simultaneously adjust with an accuracy of 40 microns. The first step is a primer which ensures long-lasting coverage as well as protection from UV rays via its SPF formula. The next layer is a foundation which provides highlighting and contouring to the wearer’s face. The final 3D printed layer is high-impact color for the cheeks, lips, and eyes.”

Using their app, you first choose a look. You can either select from hundreds already available or you can upload a photo from the internet. If you still can’t find anything you like, you can instead choose the “uniquely you” setting, and the system will design something perfectly suited to you. Then you just stick your face in the thingie (not a technical term) and presto-chango, 30 seconds later, your war paint of choice has been flawlessly applied to the front of your head.

They are currently available by invitation only. How infuriating is that? It’s okay, though. I imagine the first few versions will be insanely expensive, but I promise you that one of these things is in my future. Think of how much later you (I) could sleep! Of course, I am also enjoying contemplating the hilarity that could ensue should it malfunction. At least it will make it much easier to answer our video phones:

  2. I would love this, I might even look half decent!

  3. LOL. I was going to ask if this wasn’t on “The Jetsons” and there you had the vid.

  4. I still think this has to be some sort of marketing joke or “snake oil” thing. How can even the most high tech machine blast mascara into someone and not have them look horrific? I’m more inclined to believe in the Jetsons version.

  5. Where are the “after” photos? I’d like to see a finished application. Another thought, if there is a power outage will women remember how to apply make up manually or will they hide until power is restore and they can “put on their face?”

    • Non-machine face will become a lost art. It will be referred to as “paleo.” Like weaving and canning. It will appear on The Pioneer Woman, and our children’s children will want to interview us for school projects about how it was to apply our own makeup.

  6. My mother would give her right arm for this, seeing as she wouldn’t need it to apply makeup if she had one of these!

  7. Still not convinced this isn’t an April Fool as you first thought!

  8. Does ‘smug’ and ‘still going to be late unless the show’s right next door’ going to come as standard? I suspect so. At least until it goes wrong. That’s one heck of a bit of kit for your dressing table too.

  9. ‘the hilarity…’ I want to see the video on that. Oh, hon….put your make-up on in the closet, did you? She looked great, though.

    • I seriously need one that works, even if I only use it for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, the Fire Island Drag Invasion, and Halloween makeup. Seriously, I’m sure I spend at least 15 hours per year, just on those three days. Getting 5-15 faces done in a morning is downright impossible.

  11. I slogged through Infinite Jest earlier this year, and there is a whole sequence about the advent of video phones and how people were so weirded out with seeing each other (essentially, they couldn’t multi-task while talking) that a company began selling masks you could wear while talking. This could do the trick. And now I’m scared.
