When I was in Vegas a few weeks ago, my friends and I took a stroll through the mall in the Venetian, and it was all I could do to resist buying the ornate masks I saw for sale. Now, I’m glad I didn’t, because I’ve found something better.

Washingtonian artist Cyndy Salisbury makes one-of-a-kind papier mache masks that look good enough to be seen on stage at the Metropolitan Opera. However, lucky for us, they are available for purchase from Etsy. Her store is called TheArtOfTheMask, and it lives up to its name. Perhaps the Venetian should consider buying their wares from Ms. Salisbury!

You might also want to take a look on the store’s Facebook page, which is as full of wonders as their Etsy store, Enjoy!

  1. Love the premise of your blog – so many seem to be dedicated to the opposite. AND – what an appropriate post. Those masks are works of art. I dedicate some of my posts to beauty and wonders in nature because we sometime are prone to ignore them. I’ll be back to visit frequently.

  2. Reblogged this on arcade # 1775 and commented:
    That last mask was phenomenal.

  3. Although I think some of those masks look wonderful, I could never have them in my house, as for some reason. they creep me out a bit!

  4. I find masks a bit unsettling but these are incredible works of art. I am particularly taken with that final one with the hinged doors and the moon one with the veil going over the top of it.

  5. Yes, the mermaid mask is one of my favorites, but there are others I want too. My desire is greater than my bank account. Alas the tragedy.

  6. oh so hauntingly beautiful finds!!!
Masks are so… strangely appealing. my friend in high school collected miniature masks, they kind of freaked me out back then.
Afterwards, I studied drama where masks were part of the studies, and amongst, again the weirdest part. The most timid person can act out completely different behind a physical mask. As part of re-enactor hobby I’ve attended a few “venetian” style masked balls… there is always something strange and magical about those events, be it a masked ball or a halloween dress up party, I definitely recommend trying to wear a mask to see how it is.
