If you’ve ever played around on Google Earth, you’ve likely come across some beautiful vistas while looking for other things. Well, the wizards at Google decided to put those images to more esoteric use. Enter Earth View, a collection of breath-taking images of some of our planet’s most striking locations shot from heights we wouldn’t be able to see otherwise. 1500 carefully-curated images can be downloaded, scrolled through, searched, or played as a slideshow (“Lean Back” mode). I highly recommend the latter. Put on some music that makes you happy, get yourself a soothing beverage, and let the pretty pictures go by.
If you are a Chrome user (and really why wouldn’t you be?), there’s also a free extension that will bring up a new Earth View picture every time you open a new tab. I’m really loving that, too!
Our planet is a remarkable place, and I’m thrilled to get to look at it from a new angle. I especially like how it turns even dangerous, violent places into soothing abstracts with no social inequality and no racial tension and no unkindness and no politics, nothing to distract us from our beautiful, beautiful shared home.

Yes! And there are photos that look like Rothcos and Monets and Pollocks and lots of others to boot.

Ooooh! I had not heard of this despite using google maps and street view all the time. I’m going to have to watch the slideshow and add that extension. Thanks for sharing.

The slideshow is the most soothing thing I’ve ever seen. I want to find a way to project it on my bedroom ceiling so I can go to sleep to it.

Although from a different perspective, the Earth Porn page on Facebook has amazing photos too!

Wow. I love these. Viewing them is kind of like cloud-gazing where you see other things in what’s there. I loved that game as a kid…

I still do it, but my references have become distinctly more, um, adult.

Yes. Well. I live with a toddler so I still see elephants, unicorns and train engines too. 😉

Beautiful, isn’t it? Even the ugly indistrial stuff looks pretty when you get far enough away.

Hey Donna, love the pictures but I have to point out, I believe the photo you have listed as being of St. John of the U.S.V.I, is actually of St. John in Washington state.
