Surrealism and Sky!

“Lost and Forgotten” by Rhads

I first came across this painting by Artëm “Rhads” Chebokha on Ocean Reality‘s Facebook feed (from whence come many beautiful things), and I was instantly captivated.

Caught somewhere between dreams and the shapes we see in clouds, his paintings run the gamut from surrealism to realism, always with beautiful skies and lighting. I find their overall effect very pleasing. Although they are digital paintings, they feel much more organic to me. I can’t help thinking there’s a real canvas somewhere bearing the original of the painting above (and I can’t help wanting it!).

I wasn’t able to find out much about the artist, but his work is well represented on the usual art and social media sites: Instagram, Facebook, Behance, Deviantart, Society6, and the Russian site VK.

  1. What a wonderful imagination! It’s not just the surrealism but also the rendering and handling of light that makes them such effective dreamscapes. My favorites are the “shark eye” view of the surfboard and the ones with whales in them. I’m only drawn towards the first one in your post as there’s something very familiar about that wrecked boat – it’s so strongly reminding me of one on a beach on the island of Bute that I wonder if the artist used it as inspiration.

  2. You really do find some amazing stuff. When I got to the surfing one, I thought that it was going to be my favourite. Then I saw the one right after it and I found that one even more amazing–it reminds me of a Japanese animation. Then there had to be a cycling one.
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. My beloved father grew up in a seaport community during the waning years of schooners before the second WW. He never lost his love of magestic tall ships. I often see cloud formations that remind me of ships under sail and think of him. I could be the person on the beach looking at the cloud ship under full sail. Thank you for posting this. You made me cry – but in a nice way.
