What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Making it Rain

angelToday’s post is less of a music discovery and more of a revelation. This is the Los Angeles-based Angel City Chorale‘s performing Toto’s oft-covered “Africa” like you’ve never heard it before. I like the singing okay; parts of it are really quite lovely, and, like much of amateur chorale music, some of it is a little goofy, but it’s overall quite a nice performance. But that’s not what I wanted to share with you.

Before the music, before the singing, the director has them do something so simple, so creative, so astounding, it makes me want to go find a chorus somewhere and make it rain. I don’t want to give it away. I’ve already said too much. Just watch, and turn it up (and least the first two minutes, anyway).

  1. Wow, this is great! Let me know if you get that chorus together, I would love to be a part of it. The beginning is so cool!

  2. Yes, the effect works wonderfully at the start, Donna. Thanks for sharing this peaceful interlude today.

  3. I love this little exercise. When I was an elementary general music teacher, I did it with my students, but it is most effective with a large number. We did it in church passing it from one side of the sanctuary the other like that. Goosebumps.

  4. That was amazing. I loved the rain and thunder effects. So very clever. I will have to show my 12 year old when he gets home from school as he is in his school chorus and might find the idea of acapella sound effects inspiring.

  6. This is interesting. I have a friend in Slovenian vocal orchestra Perpetuum Jazzile and they got famous with their take of this song, thunder and all. Wonder who came first… 🙂 (Not that it’s truly crucial, but I’ve checked: PJ did it in 2009.) Perpetuum Jazzile performed Africa with Toto during their last year’s concert in Ljubljana, Slovenia. PJ also do David Guetta, The Queen, Lady Gaga, David Bowie and many others. I don’t wish to swarm you with links but maybe it would be interesting for you to check out their youtube channel.
