What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

The Steampunk Cobbler

Often, when I use the term Steampunk, it’s with a bit of a sneer. It’s not that I don’t like the overall style concept, a merging of dark, gothy, formal Victorian elements, often incorporating bits of vintage machinery, the style is theoretically comprised of many of my favorite things. When they’re combined well, the results are amazing. It’s just that the term is so often applied to attempts that are either overly precious or poorly executed. Today, however, my sneer is gone. I present you with the works of one of the very best steampunk sculptors I’ve ever seen, and I don’t just say that because of the shoes. These are the stunning sculptures of Israeli artist Costa Magarakis.

“I often find archetypes in old children’s books and toys. I am attracted to things that evoke memories from childhood. The grotesque and the unknown are all important themes in the body of my work. I try to express something from my inner mind”.

Many of his beautiful works are for sale in his Etsy shop, SpiderJelly. Of course, like most of the art that makes me swoon, they’re pretty pricey, but at least we can enjoy the pictures!

  1. It’s so “Beetlejuice!” What fun images – it’s amazing the variety you can find on Etsy.

  4. I must agree with Laura–I love the duck ship. It kind of makes sense. It would also make a great political cartoon to see a bunch of plastic ducks decked out like a naval fleet–I had better stop thinking about this image or I will be composing it al day.
I also liked the one that says to me–“There was an old woman who lived on a shoe..”

  5. ALL OF THESE!!!! (But especially the ship.)

  6. They are like something out of a Terry Pratchett novel. The turtle one is especially cool.
I second Joshuas comment on your good taste.
