The Way It Makes Me Feel

I’m having a seriously challenging week at work. There are a number of creative projects going on all at once. If they were happening one at a time, I’d be able to enjoy them more, but they’re all on an incredibly tight schedule and due at the same time. That’s okay. I’m alright with chaos, as long as it has a deadline. Come Friday night, I may be rode hard and put away wet, but at least it will be over. The dragons will be slain, the opuses writ, the somethings will have been somethinged.*
*I couldn’t think of a third thing. That’s how wiped out I am.

One of the ways I get through especially stressful, busy times is with my favorite music. Playing music that I love helps me stay (somewhat) sane, and so this week, I needed a music rediscovery.

Beloved once commented that I put today’s song into nearly every mix I make. She’s right. I love it. I love the movement and the pace. I love cooking to it and walking to it and, it turns out, I love working to it, too. I had the warm and fuzzies about the music video, also, though I hadn’t seen it since it first came out. The way I remembered it, there was a cute girl skipping around, flirting with M.J. while he sang and danced and wooed her. I went looking for it on YouTube, intending to make it today’s music video. But when I played it, I discovered that most of the video felt to middle-aged me less like young love and more like sexual harassment. There are clusters of unsmiling, unfriendly-looking men lurking in every corner, and M.J. is humping the air with noxious abandon. The whole vibe is kind of rapey. I hated it. Damn.

So I did the next best thing. I found a cover. A good cover with a bunch of happy young people and good lighting and an ugly living room and no one in danger of being dragged down an alley and violated. Whew! That’s better. Okay, back to work . . .

Check out the artist, Emily Kopp. I didn’t have much time to explore and research, but I think I’m going to like her!

  1. Yes, that original video was really rapey. I remember thinking at the time that Jackson pelvic thrusting on the street because the girl was trying to ignore him was a bit intimidating and queasy. And it annoyed me that the girl smiling and being friendly while trying to keep on walking by is like a manual for how women should defend themselves against sexual harassment because, you know, it is always up to the girl to manage these encounters and not at all the onus of men to not be threatening and predatory. But onto the cover. I really liked the tone and timbre of her voice. It worked well. But, yes, that living room is overwhelmingly lacking in inspiration.

  2. Stabby can be a good thing. I started a whole rant about two different strings of assaults against women in the Austin news but it was just too bitter and angry. And too long. Short version is that one of the predators clearly depended on and took advantage of women’s reluctance to be rude. I on the other hand — I was at a party Saturday and an long-time acquaintance was rude to me, as he often is, and I punched him in the arm. He later said that I had slapped him on Halloween and I truthfully responded that I didn’t remember seeing him on Halloween. Turns out he showed up at my party and I had completely forgotten him, whatever he said, and the slap. I actually regret hitting him. One should use ones words. But I wish I’d had the huevos do stand up for myself more when I was younger.

How about using “that” instead of “who” or “whom?” Appalling.

    Like the song tho.

  3. This is a much version than the original by MJ. I like Emily’s voice and the laid back vibe. (I don’t remember Sherry slapping anyone at the Halloween party.)
