What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

The Post-a-Day Life

blog_logoIf you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know that I have been posting every day, typically once per day, since February 2014. Quite a few people have asked how much time my daily posting schedule takes me. I thought I’d give you a little peek behind-the-scenes.

Some of my inspiration comes from things I find in real life, from art shows and museums, and window shopping, but since I work so much, I find most of my discoveries online. I usually spend between 1 and 3 hours per night looking for inspiration and composing the next post. I start with some of the hundreds of sites I have bookmarked including art and performance magazines, galleries and museums, trade magazines, and big sites with good suggestion engines like Etsy, YouTube, Flickr, and Pinterest. Because I typically work late (which entitles me to a car home), I have a free hour during the ride to do my hunting. Once I have found The Thing, I head over to Google to do my research.

Some nights, I come up dry and have to hit the saved ideas folder, which has a few hundred bookmarks in it. Some nights, I find so many great things, I get to save the extras for future exploration. Etsomnia™, of course, is quite a bit of work, so I try to draft it a week ahead of time and add to it and refine it all week until it’s ready to publish on Thursday morning.

I keep two finished or nearly-finished posts in my pocket for emergencies. I also plan ahead a bit for comfort. Tonight, for example, in addition to this week’s posts, I’m setting up posts that will publish during our next vacation.

It’s tough at first, but once you have a routine, it becomes second nature. Daily blogging does take a lot of discipline, whatever your topic, but for me, the reward far outweighs the inconveniences.

Thanks for listening. Happy blogging!

  1. Ah. I’ve often wondered how you manage a daily top-quality post, the day job, and family. Commitment, energy, and sheer joy in all, it seems.

  5. I must admit without a blogger calendar and pre scheduling running a daily blog would be very difficult. I too have saved post just for emergencies, however I wish I had more time during travel to search the web, alas I drive myself to and from work. Great post, keep up the good work

  9. Thanks for sharing! I hope in a couple years I’ll be a regular. I really have enjoyed blogging privately, I’ve always kept a journal my whole life and sometimes I’m not sure if what I blog about will be interesting, but I can see that if you research and get inspiration then your experiences and stories will resonate with those that have the same vibes I suppose? I’m not as good at readying blogs on a regular basis, but when I do, I always feel a bit encouraged! Keep up your good work.

    • Thank you! I try to spend at least half an hour a day reading other bloggers, so I can say with some authority that your personal stories and experiences can be just as engaging and as well-received as the more esoteric, typically less personal format I follow. The key to getting people to read what you write is tags. If you’re writing about struggling with a difficult child, using the tags “parenting” and “children” can point readers to your site.

Sometimes, I drop my formula and write about personal things, too. Check out the post I wrote about adoption: https://myonebeautifulthing.com/2015/07/31/wednesdays-child/

Hope you give blogging a try. Even if you don’t end up with more than a handful of readers, at least you’re not talking to yourself!

    • Speaking personally, it gives me something to be proud of. I’ve been pushing papers around for a living for way too long, and the blog helps me feel like a creative person again. Also, the constant search for beauty has really improved my outlook. It just makes me a happier person.

  13. This is great. I need to make more time for my writing. I write twice a week and it’s still hard meeting my schedule.

  18. Actively to seek ‘one beautiful thing per day’ is inspired and inspiring. It’s also probably self-healing and even, the best antibiotic ever. I might just follow suit. 🙂
