What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Likely, the first thing that strikes you about American artist Erin Cone‘s paintings is the elegance of the stylish young women she depicts. Because the clothing is so beautifully depicted, her paintings initially feel a bit like highly-skilled-if-off-center fashion illustrations. And like so many of the paintings I’ve admired, many of Cone’s subjects’ faces are hidden. Yet unlike the others which imparted feelings of sadness or nostalgia or mystery, Cone’s figures instead seem to exude a stillness, a comfortable silence, which I’ve rarely felt with American painters. (What is the matter with me that I am so drawn to faceless figures in paintings? A psychiatrist would have a field day with the wacky contents of my head.)

I’d love to hear what you think of them and what they make you feel.

I have committed to spending part of every day looking for at least one beautiful thing, and sharing what I find with you lovelies!

  1. They are beautiful…..but slightly disturbing. Maybe it’s because I cannot see their face, or maybe the placement of the hands is just ‘so’, but I detect just a little something off. I do like these but I don’t think I could hang them on a wall. I’d be peeking around the corner before I entered the room where these were hung. The doctor will see us now, Donna.

  2. The third down on the left is my favorite. There’s something of the Dutch masters in the face (that you can see), and I love the lines.

  3. I think these are brilliant. The minimalist approach to colour really appeals to me as does the focus on shape and line. I also like the quirky compositions.

  4. Another good find: they remind me somewhat of the faceless figures that they sell in the Dominican Republic. These are always slightly disturbing, to me at any rate.

  5. We came VERY close to buying a piece of her work this past January in Santa Fe. She has a series which is just hands and they are unbelievably beautiful and articulate. I actually preferred them to her other work, and hope to see more next time we go up.

  7. As far as the need for a psych goes it is the people who think they are sane one really needs to worry about.
These are beautiful reminds me a lot of Audrey and Givenchy. The form and colours are stunning.
