We are moving tomorrow, so Etsomnia™ is taking the week off. Instead, I’m pleased to bring you one of my favorite Etsy finds!

Only on Etsy could you have a seller who offers a blend of steampunk and fifties-style sci fi in objects ranging from wooden sculptures and walking sticks to boutonnieres and wedding cake toppers! Sounds nutty, but the lovely Pete from BuildersStudio makes it work. And work. And work. In fact, he’s been selling his creations on Etsy since 2007, and he’s had 1,945 sales to date. Impressive!

Pete studied English and anthropology in college. He was really drawn to the sciences and says he could have easily gone that route were it not for his abiding love for the visual arts. He began with drawing, then branched out:

“From my youngest memories, everyone knew me as an artist. In high school, I was photo editor of the yearbook. I did photography through high school and college. [I took] painting courses in college. I never even tried sculpture work until about a decade or so ago.”

But once Pete started exploring sculpture, he knew it was the medium for him. I think his love for science really comes through in his art. I hope his work makes your inner sci fi geek go whee! just like mine did!

  5. Oh goodness. These are adorable. My Steampunk 9 year old would empty my coffers buying ALL THE THINGS from that Etsy store. There was a seriously low budget UK preschool show when I was young called “Button Moon”. The characters, sets and props were cobbled together from household junk. The main character was a wooden spoon. Anyway these characters make me think of a slightly edgy, somewhat dystopian version of “Button Moon”.

Best of luck with your move! I hope it all goes smoothly and you feel at home in your temporary abode.
