This is a “valance” which I suspect smells like “skunk.”
Et·som·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once per week.
I am usually anti-curtain. Let me explain. While I can appreciate what they bring to a room, soft window treatments are also high on the list of allergen-trappers, so I generally stay away. Just now, however, since we’re living temporarily in an apartment with very high ceilings and large windows, and my preferred style of shades would cost a fortune, I gave in and went with curtains. What I ended up with was cheap, quite good looking, and gets the job done. However, before I purchased the temporary ones, I confess I dawdled a bit on Etsy to see what was out there. I was really quite pleasantly surprised. While Etsy sellers obviously can’t sell things as cheaply as Amazon, there were such gorgeous, desirable, impactful curtains on offer, I had a hard time resisting them. But it’s still Etsy, so there were some wonderful tragedies as well!

Why keep your sadness to yourself? Put it in the window so everyone can enjoy it!
Bless her heart.
This valance looks like it comes pre-spidered. Yeesh.
A little sparkle is very good. By Modnydom. On the other hand, while they’re beautiful, unless you live like a 1930s movie star, a lot of sparkle is a bit harder to pull off.
The Victorians’ obsession with obese naked babies who nearly always resemble middle-aged men continues to confound me.
Are they a bit much? Sure, but they’re for the fur-baby’s room and Precious picked them out herself!
These hand-painted silk curtains by SilkIntuition are gorgeous AND affordable!
(To self: Don’t make a cock joke, don’t make a cock joke, don’t make a cock joke…)
I just saw this video on youtube a couple days ago, and am posting it here for your enjoyment: “Why babies in medieval paintings look like ugly old men”
I am generally not a big fan of curtains either. We had to have fairly heavy curtains on the west coast of Scotland just as an added layer of insulation. We’ve also had them in the past for privacy when we’ve lived in properties that were overlooked. But as an aesthetic thing, I am not a fan. And I also hate the process of cleaning them. My compromise is pretty blinds, like Roman blinds and that sort of thing. We inherited heavy 1970s curtains when we moved into our current house and I actually rather like them in the living room and dining room so they will get to stay. Every other room is a work in progress but I intend to avoid curtains. My ideal would be that glass that goes from clear to opaque with a flick of the switch. And self-cleaning glass. But that’s never going to happen.
I also have an April obsession and I wish I had a room that would accommodate those awesome curtains. As for basic curtains, I am a fan. When the kids were little, I bought some awesome curtain sheers from Pottery Barn with little pockets in them (you could also buy seasonal inserts, like pumpkins, flowers, etc… for the pockets) and the girls loved them – as did I. I wish I could find a picture of them but I can’t.

I’m holding out for windows that darken if you glare at them.

I can’t get to them in my phone, but I’ll check them out later. They sound hideous! Can’t wait.
