As is happening in bookstores across the world these days, the employees of the 121-year-old Mollat bookstore in the Bordeaux region of France have a lot of down time. Rather than bemoaning what technology has done to their industry, these very clever folks decided to play with the internet rather than cursing it.
Their very popular Instagram series, Bookface, is the result of hours of free time, a great eye, and some very creative employees. The trompe l’oeil portraits have the dual effect of bringing people to the shop and interesting people in the books they feature. Smart!

That is some awesome creativity. I now want to work there. Kind of reminds me of when I read about the Shakespeare and Co bookstore in Paris….I think the book was called “Time Was Soft There” though I could be wrong.

I hadn’t heard of the book, but I just found it on Amazon. A second-hand copy is on its way to me! Thank you so much for telling me about it. Looks wonderful.

I always thought the same thing. Libraries, too. Saw something on Facebook today that made me laugh: your librarian name is your real name followed by a deep sigh.

Ha ha ha! When we were undergraduates, my husband worked in a bookstore that sold remaindered and slightly damaged books – mainly academic textbooks. He was supremely bored most of the time but got to learn some really arcane stuff from the obscure books.

I spent half a day looking around my office for something like that I could do at work, but spreadsheets don’t make for fun photos…

Thank you! I’m frankly amazed that all the remaining New York bookstores haven’t already done it. Cheers!
