I have half-heartedly attempted to create a Bonsai or two in my day, with predictably tragic results. The Bonsai process involves constant pruning and watering and some kind of voodoo which I definitely do not possess. Hell, I’ve even failed at keeping them alive when they come to me already dwarfed and adorable. Artist Matthew Gollop to the rescue! He creates these tiny masterpieces to take the place of your (read: my) failed Bonsai attempts. Finally a Bonsai tree I can’t kill! Using between 150 and 500 feet (yes, feet!) of wire, Gollop painstakingly constructs each tree to look as real as possible. His shop,
Metal Bonsai, would also make a pretty boss band name.
“Created from hundreds of strands of wire which run from root to branch tip/ foliage cluster, the trees support themselves and no glue is used. Each tree sculpture is unique, just like the real thing.” -Matthew Gollop
There are nearly a hundred of these lovely one-of-a-kind pieces on Gollop’s website, with prices ranging from $28 all the way up to a few hundred dollars. I think they’d be perfect for everything from a hostess gift to an office present to a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift. Metal Bonsai for everyone!

I have committed to spending part of every day looking for at least one beautiful thing, and sharing what I find with you lovelies!

The patience required to do this…….
I’m in awe.

The mind boggles. One of the things that really strikes me with artists like this whose work must take so long to plan and execute is their level of commitment. I’m really grateful that there’s someone in the world not just creative enough to dream it but skilled and committed enough to actually make it. Amazing.

They probably love doing it, which makes it fun to do. Me? It would be work.

As long as I know my results are going to be spectacular, I don’t mind the fiddly bits. I once spent 4 hours decorating 14 ugly sweater cookies. My mother-in-law who was living with us at the time thought I was nuts. But they were damned cute!

Bonsai intimidate the daylights out of me as well. I’ve had to “plant-sit” some once or twice. The terror of something happening to it on my watch! These wire sculptures are lovely…

Of course, you might get some funny looks if you asked someone to plant sit for them…

We need one. We’re in mourning for my daughter’s bonsai which we kept alive (or was it just a long process of dying?) For 14 months, yes 14 months – I was quite impressed, but what a feeling of failure

Maybe it was just the tiny tree’s time…

These are just charming. I am brown-thumbed (and my Great-Gran said I had the Evil Eye to boot) so I am not a very competent gardener and the only house plants that survive living with me are cacti – and not always then. I had a friend who had loads of bonsai trees that he cultivated and cared for. I tried to never make eye contact with them just in case.

I have a big fat green thumb when it comes to outdoor plants, but indoors is a whole different story. I love that your Great Gran said you had the evil eye. That should be on your resume.

I’ve used that Evil Eye to my advantage in order to wither my enemies. I’m better with outdoor plants than indoor ones but I still can’t grow anything a bit needy like roses or tomatoes.

Roses and I are besties. I haven’t tried edibles yet, but I’m a little afraid of them.

I’m good with herbs and root veggies when it comes to edibles but everything else eluded me. I haven’t tried growing anything edible since we moved to the US.

These were a thing in the 1970s. I always kicked myself for not buying one then. Maybe I need to now.

I could kill a cactus and added bonsai tree to my kill list not long ago so this would be a better option for black thumbed me!

I’m not so bad with plants, but bonsai really do get the better of me every time.
