It’s May. I’m thinking about summer. I’m thinking about sunscreen and bathing suits and frozen cocktails at sunset and dancing all night in the breezes coming off the Great South Bay. I’m not thinking about winter sports. I’m certainly not thinking about ice skating. Until. Until I saw this video in my Facebook feed, and I ended up on my feet, applauding and crying like a crazy person. (I eventually realized they couldn’t see/hear me, and I sat down again. I’m not a complete loon.)
This is the incomparable Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres taking the 2017 World Team Trophy in Tokyo. Prepare to stand. And cheer.

Yay! (Me, too, but don’t tell anyone.) Wait. I already did. Never mind.

Where has time gone? More than fifty years ago my partner and I won the Junior Gold medal in skating. Roller and not ice. Wonder how good I would be today. Not very but at age 76 I probably shouldn’t be on skates to start with. Great Tube. Beautiful skating. Body control was unbelievable. I know the number of hours they had to put in on that routine. I wonder if they are a couple off the ice. I was surprised at the large number that were just skate partners and when their own way off the ice/boards. Hal

They may or may not be a couple, but they certainly make a lovely pair!

I’m a devoted fan of figure skating. James and Cipres are not a couple off ice, but they sure steam it up on the ice. I’ve been watching them develop for years and this year they finally broke through. Here’s another for you – the incomparable Sui and Han from China.
Oh and Ice Dancers Papadakis and Cizeron from France
Love your blog by the way.

I often wonder what it would feel like to be that good at something. To know so completely that you’re doing the thing you’re made for. Beautiful.

It is not something I do often (usually only catching a bit here and there during the Olympics) but I find there is something very mentally soothing or hypnotic about watching figure skating. That was a pretty breathtaking routine.
