Et·som·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once per week.

It’s nearly 2018, so it seems high time to introduce you to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, the Pantone color of the year for 2018 (and one of my favorite colors of all time!). Though I haven’t really explored the reasons why I have always been drawn to this shade, Pantone seems to have gone deeper, and their assessment makes sense to me.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From Exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.” -Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute

I thought it would be fun to explore some of Etsy’s more striking ultra violet-hued wares for inspiration. And you never know from whence that inspiration will come! I confess I’m such a huge fan of this color, I didn’t find a single thing that needed lampooning. Hope you enjoy these beauties as much as I did!

  1. Finally, my most favorite color ever makes color of the year! The biggest perk…lots of clothing will be purple this year, which means I should stock up. The year that Tangerine was big I somehow ended up with almost an entirely orange wardrobe, and it’s more than time to change that…it’s been a few years since I’ve been shopping and I’m still walking around looking like an orange popsicle. 😉

  7. I am relatively new to this whole Colour of the Year shebang and don’t quite understand it’s chicken and egg nature: do they select a colour that is trending or do they choose a colour which then determines it will trend? In any case, this colour is one of my favourites so I am quite happy if it appears everywhere. I especially love that murano glass dish and the painted velvet cushions. My 12 year old son would love that purple crackle quartz.

  8. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the color. But I actually surprisingly like some of these!
