What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Happy Nearly New Year!

I, frankly, have had quite enough of 2017. True, it didn’t steal away as many celebrities as that greedy bastard 2016 did, but there were terrible storms, people suffered unthinkable hardship, there were (and are) uncontrollable disasters, and our political mess deepened and broadened in ways I, at least, never thought possible.

I’m ready to be done with 2017. Do I have any good reason to think 2018 will be better? Not particularly, but I’m going to hang onto the hope anyway. Work with me here. Anyway, I thought in order to self-soothe, I’d list the things that went right in 2017. Feel free to add to the list. Here goes:

Okay. Now you…

And while we wait for you to think of something to share, here’s one of my favorite comedy routines of all time. This is the incomparable Victor Borge performing at the 1986 British Royal Command Performance.

Have a fun, safe New Year’s Eve, my dears!

  10. I love how almost every blog post I have read that lists things to be grateful for mentions Prince William and Meghan Markle! They are the golden couple! (Sorry Will and Kate!) I hope 2018 is better for you:) 💗

  11. 2017 was indeed a clusterfudge of a year filled with relentless bad news. I found it increasingly important for managing my elevated stress levels to take breaks from keeping on top of national and global current affairs so as to decompress and find the time to focus on other things. There was lots to be worried and distressed about this year, for sure, but if one found the time to poke about at macro level, there were also stories of hope and kindness and just basic human decency. I mean, it would be nice to live in a society where basic human decency and compassion were so commonplace as to not be very noteworthy but for now those were my rays of sunshine amid all the storms. It also warms the cockles of my soul to know that, in addition to increased engagement in grass roots activism, one response to the current climate has been for people to get more involved in outreach in their communities, supporting charities and organisations practically and financially, maybe even creating a much needed resource where none existed. I don’t have much hope that 2018 will be much better than 2017 or 2016 but maybe, just maybe, there will be gradual cultural shifts that will make a difference in the future.
