Is this mid-century orange ceramic swan my style? No. But if it comes with a Barbie riding it, I’m in! By Janastuff
Et·som·ni·a (/etˈsämnēə/), noun, 1. a sleep disorder caused by obsessive Etsy browsing. 2. The surprising arrival of weird handmade merchandise ordered when one is only half conscious. (True story.) 3. An excuse for me to be an obnoxious, snarky New Yorker once per week.
Today’s topic reminds me of my mother. On evenings when she and my father were going out to a party or a show, I used to love watching her get ready. It felt like she was creating art. The dress, the shoes, the wrap, the bag, and finally the jewels, her process of choosing her adornment for the evening was one of my earliest favorite rituals. I can’t see a dressing table or a vanity set without getting flashbacks to those happy hours.
But though I love antique vanities and many of the lady-like gew-gaws that go along with them, I also suffer from an instinctive horror of overly-fussy, gratuitously-precious, twee twaddle. And Etsy, of course, provides all of the above, as well as some surprisingly weird and ugly offerings to boot.

It’s really cute, but I don’t think I could sit on it. It would feel like this.

Hilarious as it is, I couldn’t handle facing this much negativity first thing in the morning.
I get where they’re going, but it’s a little too Georgia O’Keefe for me.
A boudoir chair with multiple personality disorder: the noxious lime and pink satin say it wants attention but the camo hints that it’s trying to hide (and failing).
This Guilloche Art Deco manicure set makes me feel all tingly! By DecoDazeFineVintage
I also have an obsession with all things related to vanity tables and have similar memories of my mom beautifying herself when I was young. My grandfather was an expert woodworker and made her the most elegant vanity table ever back in the 70s….and she gave it to ME a few years ago. I die of happiness everytime I look at that table. Vanities went out of style during the last few decades, so I wonder if the younger generations will still appreciate them?
How wonderful that you inherited the piece. You must have been over the moon! I have an antique I traded a bedroom set for years ago. We’re redoing our bedroom when we get home, and there’s no longer space for it. I’ve found it a good home, but I’m a little brokenhearted to give it up.
My childhood glamour memories are of my grandmother who was always perfectly polished before she went out in public. Heck, she was more polished than I have ever been even if she was only walking from her bedroom to the bathroom. She had a lovely post-war vanity table and a lovely bakelite vanity set. I inherited a lot of my character from my Gran but I definitely did not inherit the poise and polish.
My Gran was proud of me for many things but was definitely disappointed in the (lack of) attention paid to my appearance. I was her first granddaughter and I think she had hopes for one that liked hair styling and fashion and shopping and I am none of those. She definitely despaired of how scruffy I was.
My great grandmother and my grandmother, and to a lesser extent my mom, were poised and polished to the nines on a minute by minute basis. Seriously, I never saw my gran without her hair perfectly curled and her lipstick flawlessly applied. One day she was over at my house and was in horror because I walked to the mailbox without any makeup on (gasp!). I feared I’d give her heart failure if I confessed how I didn’t wear makeup 90% of the time. It’s definitely a huge generational difference.
I think you are right about it being generational, Violet. One of the ways I could tell my Gran was ailing before it was obvious was that she would allow us to see her before she had set her hair and put her lipstick on.
That’s very true. When I was little, my mother used to garden in a dress, pantyhose, and kitten heels. She eventually worked up her nerve to wear pants, but they were still pretty dressy.
Kitten heels for gardening….WOW, that’s fancy. I have managed to garden in a dress, but not in pantyhose and certainly not in fancy shoes. I wear “duck shoes” for gardening which even I find a bit appalling (but they’re supremely practical). Posh, I ain’t. 😉
OMG, memories indeed! My mom had so many trinkets that they overflowed from her vanity to the top of her dresser. I can see them now, those art-deco pieces of furniture, all shiny brown and curves, covered with stuff! My gosh, did she ever collect “tchotchkes”! She probably would’ve loved all the items you found here! (I adored her but she was not necessarily the best arbiter of taste.)

I have seen quite a few of those trinket boxes done as art projects….so now I know where they go afterward.

They go to Etsy, the shitty crafts graveyard. (And also the source of nearly all the art an fashion that I love…)

I have very few friends these days who I would say can pull off poise and polish for any length of time. You are not alone!

That was my mom, too. I had to take a minute to fix her hair and powder her face when she had visitors her last few days in hospice.
