I do some of my best singing when I’ve had a cocktail or two. Apparently, I’m not the only one. This is Brisbane, Australia’s Pub Choir, and it’s perfectly informal and inclusive. Here’s how it works: PC publishes the details for a singing event on their website and social media. You buy your tickets for $20 each. Then you show up, have a few pints, learn your part, and sing. That’s all there is to it. And all are welcome.

Their Director, Astrid Jorgensen, does the arrangements, teaches the songs to the happy drunks, and conducts the performances. She says that running Pub Choir is basically of all her dreams coming true. I think she must have the funnest job in the world!

“Everybody can sing, and we’re on a mission to prove it. Pack yourself into a pub with hundreds of strangers, learn a song in 3 part harmony in 90 minutes, perform it twice, and if the publishing Gods are smiling: have it immortalised in video forever.

“No audition, no solos, no commitments, no sheet music, NO WORRIES.

“Music belongs to everybody. So grab a beer, relax, and simply open your sound hole (your mouth, FYI). It’s rowdy, wholesome, and so much damn fun.”

About Pub Choir

And though they may sound pretty good, they’re not snobs about who can participate.

Q: WHAT IF I REALLY SUCK AT SINGING?
A: COME! Are you mad? Singing feels great. This is a judgement free zone. Seriously, don’t worry so much. Come and let your voice out to play. You might surprise yourself! Ever sung in the shower? Or in the car? Bring that voice. Our rehearsals are relaxed and supportive. And rowdy. There’s no way you’re going to be heard over hundreds of other drunk people. Good luck with THAT.

Pub Choir FAQ

I love everything about this. I wish they weren’t so darned far away! I know my posse would have a great time at one of these things.

You can follow the Pub Choir’s shenanigans on their website, their YouTube Channel, and on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

  4. had of been about 1950. Before TV. Internet there were some large dance halls in St. Louis MO, USA. I was there dancing, when they stopped to music and almost all of the people there sang some old German drinking song they all knew. So group singing is not new. Hal

  5. I absolutely love this idea! Singing is so joyful and singing with other people is so much fun. Formal choirs, however, can be too intimidating – either because of auditions and quality control or because of the intense commitment of time. The casual and inclusive nature of this is just really wonderful. You can see from the faces how much everyone is enjoying participating.
