It’s no secret that bats have gotten a bad rap. (Thanks a lot, Bram Stoker.) Sure, they have freaky little faces, and flying mammals are a little alarming, but did you know that a bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in an hour? The smart folks at BatBnB know, and they’re trying to bring bats back!
“BatBnB is important not only for pest control but also to help dispel misconceptions about bats. Bats are not as scary as popular media leads you to believe. There are literally hundreds of thousands of bats living in bat houses across North America, and there isn’t a single record of a bat house owner being harmed by a bat. BatBnB is a valuable tool to educate kids about valuable animals in the ecosystem and to spark conversations with friends and family about local wildlife.”
-BatBnB on Indiegogo
Conceived of by an enterprising Google employee and an architect, the stylish-looking BatBnB bat houses make excellent homes for the creatures and their families. And they’re not only attractive, the homes are also brilliantly-designed. Made entirely of sustainable harvested Western red cedar, the bat houses mimic the animals’ natural habitat and include vents for climate control, predator deterrents, and are designed to capture and retain heat from direct sunlight. Once bats discover your BatBnB, the little animals will help you have a mosquito-free (and beetle-free) summer.
You can learn more about the product and get your own BatBnB on the company’s website and on Indiegogo.

They say it can take a year or two, but I think there are things you can do to attract them.

There are bats that live up around my non-functioning chimney. We think they hang out between the defunct metal flashing on one side of the stone chimney. I would love something like this 🙂

I have never seen any bats is my area. So, I am not buying one unless it came with bats. But great idea. Hal

I love this idea! I love bats and we definitely have them in our neighbourhood so I would love to encourage them to come and move in and have a safe place to live. The mosquito control would be a great side benefit too. I am going to bookmark the website for when funds allow.

Bats are a big deal in Austin: we have the largest urban bat colony in the U.S. under one of our bridges. It’s quite a sight to watch them when they all come out in later summer! And I love seeing them swoop around in my neighborhood. Yay bats!

I love bats and we have plenty around us. Houston and Austin’s bats are famous! It’s the mosquitoes….

Makes sense. I go to Houston every year, and I was always amazed by how few mosquitoes you seem to have. Now I know why!

How few??? Where are you staying? We are inundated in the Woodlands and have a mosquito misting system (which still doesn’t kill them all).

Very few. I stay at the Houston Magnolia once a year, and even though we walk around a fair bit, I don’t think I’ve ever been bitten.
