This is almost too painful to post about. Like many musicians, singer Melissa Etheridge has been recording daily concerts in her home to share with her fans. I had bookmarked this recording of Etheridge and her daughter performing the gorgeous song Fix You, made famous by Coldplay. The song is always a real heartbreaker, and I’ve been intending to share it with you for a few weeks.
Three days ago, Melissa Etheridge’s lost her son, making this recording and the choice of song especially poignant and painful. When I heard the news, I immediately thought of this song.
“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction. My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. My heart is broken.”
Those poor, poor people.
You can watch all of Melissa Etheridge’s Concerts From Home series on her YouTube channel.
If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction or mental illness, go check out the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline’s website or call 800-662-HELP.
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.
Many thanks to Alison and Don of Adventures in Wonderland for pointing me to this beautiful video.

Oh..I had not heard this. Saying good by is always hard but must be especially hard when it is so unnecessary. I admit I just don’t understand the attraction to drugs. They hurt so many people and those left behind have to ‘deal’ with it forever.

I think it’s especially unfair when someone gets addicted to something given to them by a doctor. They didn’t choose that life. Addiction is so terrible.

What an awful tragedy. Addiction can touch every family regardless of geography, class, race, faith group, status. Addiction is just horrible. More needs to be done to battle the complex reasons people become addicts and more needs to be done to support those with addictions to overcome them.

It is absolutely true that it’s the great equalizer. No one is immune. I just don’t understand why anyone still prescribes opioids. Isn’t there anything less addictive that can do the job?

I obviously lived in a different culture with a slightly different attitude to healthcare and prescriptions. That isn’t to say there isn’t an addiction problem in my home country also but I think a shift in that culture is part of the solution.

All of her home concerts are good, but this one really struck me, even before it had extra meaning.

Don’t why but I had a hard getting it to play. It finally played for me. It is a beatiful song. Yes, drugs are killing way to many people these days. Yes, I am old school but when I was young if I even thought about doing something that stupid, I ate my meals standing up because my bottom hurt too much to sit. Hal

I had a similar upbringing, but I confess I did some experimenting. I was one of the lucky ones. It didn’t become an addiction for me, so when I decided to drop it, I was able to just walk away. I now not everyone is that fortunate.

I feel like my eyesight has fallen off a cliff since the quarantine. I now have reading glasses in every room. That’s new.

I buy 5-pack sets of all different colors, and the only ones I can ever find are the dumb brown ones. Yuck.

Yes, me too – 3-packs for $24 and then I lose them or break them. Such a pain having to wear glasses after a life of perfect vision.
