I often post about modern musical groups with a retro sound. If you regularly read OBT, you know I have a particular love for the music of the 1940s and 1950s, but the retro-style singers I typically post about are usually women. I was delighted when these four gents popped up in my feed. I confess that I haven’t spent much time listening to The Four Freshmen, but The Bean Tones’s Freshmen covers are making me think I should explore the originals further.
The Bean Tones got their start when all four were students at the Berklee College of music. They, of course, began as a barbershop quartet (which roots are still apparent in their arrangements), but eventually transitioned to performing mostly jazz arrangements.
You can follow The Bean Tones on their website and on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

I only had time to listen to a couple of the videos right now but I like what I heard so far. There is a real 40s vibe to the timbre of their voices and their syncopation. They also seem to be having a lot of fun together.

I honestly think that last thing is the special sauce that often is the difference between me liking something and loving it. Fun is infectious!
