Norwegian artist Johanne Birkeland (A.K.A. Jossolini) creates one-of-a-kind, dynamic, sculptural-yet-functional ceramic pieces with a big personality. While she uses traditional pottery techniques, her pieces are anything but traditional. Because of Birkeland’s thorough understanding of her medium, she is able to challenge the strength of her materials and to play with balance in her unexpected forms.
“Clay is a soft and organic material, and its natural movement can create amazing shapes. I have come up with some of my best designs by letting the clay do as it wants, and to control its movement only slightly. I strive to find the perfect meeting point between clay as a dependent material and me as a craftsman.”
