I recently became aware of a term that is gaining momentum on social media. It’s Glimmer, and here’s what it means. It’s the opposite of a trigger. Triggers make you feel unsafe, unhappy, uneasy, uncomfortable, while glimmers are things that make you feel safe, happy, and comfortable. People have been sharing their glimmers, and I’m loving the flood of positivity!
Glimmers can be either tiny moments of joy or larger things that bring us happiness. And they’re actually good for you! According to Dr. Ketam Hamdan (@brainhealthdoc), understanding the difference and being more intentional about glimmers in our life is important for our mental health. They can activate the body’s ventral vagal nervous system to help us move forward in achieving a happier outlook.
You can see more on the Instagram hashtag #glimmer. And you can check out the adorable illustrations by Nadya Bonten-Slenders (the artist responsible for the adorable picture at the top of this post) on her Nadyart Instagram account.

Glimmer is a new term to me too. I really like having such a clear and concise word for something so important. Goodness knows the world is full of triggers but it is also full of glimmers if we just take time to pay attention to them or, when necessary, seek them out. Your blog is, of course, a wonderfully curated archive chock full of glimmers.
