Today, we’re headed to Scotland, with Chris Lawlor as our guide.
I went to Scotland once. I spent an incredible week in St. Andrews and Edinburgh, and the fact that still think of it as magical is a real tribute to the beauty of the place. It was the last trip I took with my ex. We both knew that the marriage was over. However, we were offered this free trip, and neither of us wanted to miss it. We basically avoided each other the whole time, which was definitely for the best. I met some incredible people, laughed with them a lot, and had some much-needed alone time to wander and marvel at the sights. Being surrounded by all that gorgeous nature and ancient architecture really helped me get my head on straight, and after years of fighting, I finally felt what it was like to be at peace again. That trip gave me the courage to finally leave, and I’ll be forever grateful.
Anyway, back to Scotland. Chris Lawlor is a Scottish native whose knowledge of obscure spots in his country has gotten his social media more than 1 million views. The places he posts about run the gamut from obscure hiking and climbing spots to car and wheelchair accessible wonders. I love how passionate he is about his country, and I’m sure that I never would have heard about most if not all of the magical spots Lawlor recommends without him.
You can see all of Chris Lawlor’s magnificent Scotland content on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

As a Scot, I am obviously biased but I really do think Scotland is a beautiful country full of wonderful landscapes. It’s a shame about the rain and the midges but otherwise it is a glorious place to explore. I grew up near a couple of the locations you selected and lived in proximity to a couple more so am very familiar with them. I had, however, never even heard of the Japanese garden let alone visited it which just goes to show that there are always new places to learn about.

I often envy your childhood in Scotland. I really am a huge fan. Can’t wait to get back there someday!

You definitely don’t want to envy my childhood in Scotland. I grew up in a post-war new town that was an ugly concrete carbuncle with lots of social problems. It’s better now but 8 year old me made a plan to escape my home town and worked hard to accomplish that goal. My family always took us on day trips, however, so we got to visit lots of attractive and interesting places.

I was imagining something much more “Stone of Destiny.” How disappointing (more for you than me, of course)

Don’t get me wrong: I do have plenty of happy childhood memories. It was just pretty hardscrabble and tough too.
