What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Clothespins and Ingenuity

Mother-and-daughter team Penny and Briony Thomson create magical-looking miniature automata that manage to move just like the creatures they’re depicting. I think their papier-mâché works are just marvelous, and I was delighted to learn they’re made entirely of recycled, reused, and/or repurposed items (like clothespins and paperclips!). What a great second life for such mundane items.

Since their first own sculpture went viral in 2022, the pair struggle to keep up with demand for their brand of magic, and pieces fly off the shelves as soon as they’re announced. They also sell little sculptures and even D.I.Y. automata kits!

You can see all of Penny & Briony Thomson’s gorgeous miniature automata sculptures in their Etsy shop and on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

  1. The kinetic pieces are marvelous and I found that there is pretty much something for everyone on their Etsy page.

  2. These pieces are astoundingly good! The perfect rendering of all of those forms and textures at such a tiny scale is impressive but being able to construct such micro components to create kinetic sculptures truly blows my mind. And I am golluming really hard.
