I love real estate. The good, the bad, the nutty, all of it. So when I happened upon the Tumblr known as The Worst Room, I knew I’d found something special.
It’s a simple premise. It’s just a blog about trying to find affordable real estate on Craigslist, both in New York and elsewhere. Each post includes a picture, the rent and neighborhood, and a few key quotes from the listing. Doesn’t seem so remarkable, does it? But it’s the properties he finds that make it extra wonderful.
When he started The Worst Room in 2012, Ryan Nethery once again found himself alternately couch surfing and living out of his car. He had found himself residentially challenged so often, he decided to turn his endless search for an affordable place to live into an art project. The result is a hilarious/depressing catalog of the dregs of New York real estate (with a few non-New York properties contributed by readers).
Since I found this blog two days ago, it has appeared in my dreams both nights. I’m hoping that by sharing it with you, it will leave me alone and let me sleep! (Sorry if I’m passing on the real estate nightmares . . .)

What an interesting post and honestly, some of those “worst room” pictures came me chills. I’d get nightmares too!

My “favorite” has to be the rickety, creepy stairs. 😉

My God, some of those are horrendous! Who wants a toilet in the kitchen? You would think people would be embarrased to rent some of these hovels out!

Desperate people have no shame. And I left off the ones that came with sexual favors because they were too gross. Craig’s List is a sewer.

I know what you mean. And it wasn’t bad looking, either. Would it have killed them to put in a wall and a door?

Too funny……This makes those tree houses and small houses on wheels you see on HGTV seem lavish!

That was just too funny. The eat-in kitchen and the toilet kitchen were hilarious.
I will admit, I do have a room in my house with those exact bunkbeds. Maybe I should start charging my kids rent.

That sounds like a great idea! And if they misbehave, you can threaten them with weird Craig’s List roommates!
