The Graubünden Department of Tourism in Switzerland had a genius idea. Take a sweet-looking, gregarious old man in front of a stunning rural vista and have him video chat with Zurich’s equivalent of Grand Central Station. The man talks to people walking by and invites them to join him in the mountains for the afternoon. If they say yes, a paid train ticket pops out the bottom of the monitor. Cute, but not exactly life-changing, right?

I’m not sure why this video struck such an emotional chord with me, but it really did. There’s something so innocent, so hopeful about the idea, it makes me wish I lived in a world where such things were possible.

I guess location is everything. If you tried this in New York, it would immediately turn into an episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims.” But still, what a lovely idea.

Humanizing technology. Can you imagine?

Don’t we all wish our world could be that safe? When we were stationed in England in 1990 (Danielle was born there), the little town of Hitchin was my favorite place to go with the kids; cobblestone streets and no cars , nothing but Moms, babies, little kiddos, and the occasional retired person out and about. There were lots of cool little British shops to explore and it was nothing to see a pram ( with a baby in it) parked outside the store, unattended. The mother was inside the store. I’m an American…I was not that trusting of my fellow man.

Oh my gosh, Donna! I smiled the entire time I watched this and then almost cried. How beautiful is this when you can make so many people smile–I mean really smile. And that woman who kissed the screen..! This was awesome.

Very sweet. But if my daughter was abroad and got on a train to meet this guy, (but mom! He looks like santa!) I’d let her have it.- HAHA! 😳
