Ray Jones

Ray Jones makes truly unique, one-of-a-kind boxes made entirely of wood. Even the hinges, fasteners, and drawer slides are handmade and then the boxes are covered in exotic, highly-detailed veneers.

Originally trained as an aerospace engineer, Jones spent his college summers working in construction, a job he says  “gave me a lot of confidence working with my hands.” When he graduated and rented his first house, instead of buying furniture, Jones chose to purchase woodworking tools and then make his own furniture.

While he was courting his wife, he made her a keepsake box and realized that was the form he was meant to pursue. He abandoned all other projects and began focusing on boxes. He has certainly perfected his art. These boxes are truly a thing of beauty.

“Arca Botanicum” by Dixie Biggs and Ray Jones uses walnut, cherry, and boxwood from Bartram’s Garden. Artists used wood salvaged from 13 varieties of trees that were damaged or toppled in a 2010 storm.
