When I came across the photo above, I knew I absolutely had to find its creator. A little hunting turned up the website of Masters & Munn. But while most of the artists I profile seem unaware of their work’s value in home decor, M&M describe their work as “bespoke sculpture and objets d’art for landscapes and interiors.” I initially found this somewhat off putting, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how brilliant it is. Why shouldn’t they embrace their work’s commercial appeal? Does that make it less artistic? I think not.

Although the installation above is their most famous, M&M are predominantly known for creating desirable sculptures from life casts. Their pregnant women’s torsos have gotten a good deal of attention from the parenting magazines, and although I’m not sure I’d want to have a cast of my preggo self hanging around, I can see why it would appeal to some. As interesting as their forms are, it’s really their use of unexpected materials and textures and patterns that really got my attention. Who knew ladies’ bottoms could be so lovely covered in William Morris wallpaper patterns? Not I!
