Chicago-based artist Emily Van Hoff makes something she calls squiggle quilts, and I’m in love! Her wildly unusual fiber art pieces are bright and fun and so very creative. Van Hoff’s background is in graphic design, and I love the way she has merged that eye with fabric to create something completely new in the quilting world.
Van Hoff’s fun use of color and her talent with pairing geometrics and freeform shapes make for some very joyous art. I’m also in total awe of her beautifully-neat sewn rows. I can never seem to sew a straight line, much less hundreds of them!
“I am deeply interested in the space that exists between art and design and craft. That intersection is where the magic happens for me, and quilting has been my perfect tool to bring that to life.”

These are wonderful! I really love her mission of finding the dialogue between art and craft because I think it is a very wobbly, squishy dividing line. You know I love Art Deco forms and anything MCM so the shapes of these pieces really appeal to me. I would happily give any of them wall space but I think my favourite is the one with all the greens as it particularly makes me think of Art Deco interior design or jewellery.
