It’s Not-Really-Wordless Wednesday! 11/26/14: Time for some tunes. And today’s is something very special.
You’d have to have been living under a rock for the last 60+ years to not be at least a little familiar with the Beach Boys’ hit, God Only Knows. The flipside of Wouldn’t It Be Nice, not only was it all over the radio in 1966 and voted to number 25 on Billboard’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, it was also the opening music for HBO’s very popular series, Big Love.
But the BBC has managed to reinvent it in a big way. To launch their new channel, BBC Music, they formed a supergroup called The Impossible Orchestra, comprised of some of the biggest talents in music today to record a cover of the already-iconic song. The group includes Brian Wilson of the original Beach Boys, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Kylie Minogue, and a host of other luminaries from all genres, and the recording is a total delight. And director François Rousselet pulled out all the computer-generated stops to make the video a visual treat as well.
The day after its debut on BBC, the single went on sale as a charity donation to the BBC’s charity, Children in Need, which raises funds to improve the lives of disabled children and young people in the UK. So go do a nice thing, and if you like it, buy it!
Okay, that wasn’t even a little wordless. Hope you nonetheless enjoy the song!
