Today, we’re looking at the complex and magnificent automata by Stoccafisso Design, the brainchild of Italian maker Amedeo Capelli. I just love the way his mind works. I’ve seen and enjoyed plenty of automata over the years, but his little characters seem to move with more charm and purpose than most.

These are terrific. I like the combination of the aesthetic of the rustic carving (it reminds me of my childhood whittling) and the precision engineering involved in the design of the movement. I am smitten by the skeleton orchestra but I also really like the wee ghost watering the grave and the foxes among the trees. They are all completely charming and I would love to own any one of them.
