When I first watched the first music video below from Spencer Sutherland, I thought I had found Freddie Mercury reincarnate. I know that seems unlikely, but wait until you hear this singer! Sutherland’s style is very 1970s, his vocal range is impressive, and his voice is pure velvet, but it’s his vocal control that’s reminding me of The Great One. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Drama was the first song I heard. It’s clearly a tribute to Queen, but I feel like the similarities are still there in his other songs as well.
I’m highly entertained by Sutherland’s music videos, which are very creative. Whoever is getting the ideas for these videos is a very solid visual storyteller. They’re not nutty like Ok, Go’s videos, but they’re good little movies nonetheless. I’m always grateful when a current artist takes the music video thing seriously. It’s a medium I would be very sad to see go, and thanks to social media, the art form is experiencing something of a renaissance.
You can (and should) follow the amazing Spencer Sutherland on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
