Larga Vida al Art Déco

Ernesto García Cabral

My dear friend Annie B turned me onto today’s artist. These are the wonderful Art Deco illustrations by Mexican artist Ernesto García Cabral, A.K.A. El Chango. Cabral was an artist from the time he could hold a crayon. His first known published work appeared in a newspaper when he was just 10 years old, and by the time he was 12, he was teaching drawing at his school. He studied art in both Mexico and France. Once he began his professional career in art, his early work consisted mainly of political cartoons and caricatures related to the Mexican revolution. But it was really his gorgeous, fashionable illustrated magazine covers that made him a household name.

The artist died in 1968, and left behind him an impressive body of work comprised of thousands of magazine covers, Mexican movie posters, cartoons, and caricatures. Cabral’s illustrations serve as a marvelous example of the art and style of the times in which he worked.

Thank you for introducing me to an artist from that era who I had no familiarity with.

Two things. One is, I recently saw a meme that basically said, “Art Nouveau looks like it was designed by Elves and Art Deco is designed by Dwarves” and…it works.

Thing the second: Illustration is my first love. When I went to “art school” at 18 years old, I was firmly informed that “illustration” is pronounced the way you would say “shit on my shoe” and that even Norman Rockwell was “just an illustrator.” Yet, our first introduction to art is illustration and for most of us, it’s a key part of early literacy and we treasure those picture books. So, PFFFFT to the art world that doesn’t think it’s “art” because the technical skill is incredible and we carry images like that with us and they help frame the world as well as being symbols of early memories.

I just saw that meme, too! The art world, such as it is, is a jerk. I eschewed film school for videography school because I wanted technical knowledge rather than someone telling me what was art and what wasn’t. Eye of the beholder, baby! And I would happily sit in on your lectures anytime!
