All this Olympic fever has got me craving figure skating, so when I found this remarkable thing on Memo of the Air by way of Miss Cellania, I was ready for it! This is the wonder that is synchronized skating, and I can’t believe isn’t more popular in the U.S. Apparently, Canada has been offering synchronized teams for aspiring skaters for quite a while now. I’m sure the sport teaches the participants great control and technical skills.
According to the U.S. Figure Skating website, 87 teams qualified for the 2026 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. The competition will be hosted by Salt Late City in early March. I did a little research into why synchro skating isn’t an Olympic event, and apparently it’s because of the strict limits on athlete numbers and costs associated with adding large teams. Synchronized skating teams tend to include between 16 and 20 athletes, and hosting teams of that size would cause housing and funding issues for the International Olympic Committee. Twice, the International Skating Union has formed a working group to consider adding the sport to the Olympic games, and twice, they’ve been shot down. I get it, but it’s a shame. These skaters are amazing!

Fascinating. I had never heard of this competition. The closest thing I can think of to the performances is the now defunct Ice Capades.

Looks like fun as long as everyone stays in their place.

I had no idea there was even such a thing as synchronized skating until now but I have already formed the opinion that they should eliminate some events in order to make space for synchronized skating.
