Floral artist Sue McLeary, A.K.A. Passionflower Sue, creates avant-garde floral fashion. Yes, you read that right. Floral fashion is apparently a thing! Maybe it’s because spring finally feels like a real thing, but I’m so taken with her fashion-forward wearable designs!
McLeary began as a traditional florist, but she wanted people to have a more impactful, intimate relationship to flowers. She began experimenting with unusual flowers and unexpected designs. But then when Covid hit, she felt knocked off of her axis. Because they were all she had access to, she began playing with hyacinths from the corner store. McLeary deconstructed the plants and strung them together. After playing with the shapes she could create with the wire, she began to think about wearable floral designs, and her Big Idea was born. She credits the solitude of that time with giving her to time to explore new ways to make art with flowers. In addition to her wild creations, McLeary is known for her popular book, The Art of Wearable Flowers, and for her online and in-person floral design classes.
