Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia?
Lydia the tattooed lady
She has eyes that men adore so
And a torso even more so
Lydia, oh Lydia, that en-cy-clo-pedia
Lydia, the queen of tattoo
On her back is the Battle of Waterloo
Beside it the Wreck of the Hesperus, too
And proudly above waves the red, white and blue
You can learn a lot from Lydia!

– Harold Arlen

Earlier this month, I wrote about some interesting and desirable new work being done in ceramics in my post “Not Your Mother’s Porcelain Figurines.” As forward-thinking as that work was, these pieces take it to the next level.

Scottish artist Jessica Harrison has created a series of traditional porcelain figurines in ballgowns with full body tattoos called Flash. It feels like empowerment. It feels like she’s doing her part to help redefine beauty. This is a trend that’s been gaining steam for a while, but every little step forward makes me happy (and makes me want more tattoos).

And don’t miss her “broken“series of fatally-wounded porcelain ladies. I like this lady!

    • I was really impressed, too. She doesn’t seem to sell the figurines, though. Only prints of the pieces. I don’t want a print. I want an actual painted lady (or at least one carrying her own head!).
