“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.” – Paul Caponigro
After looking at Lisa Holloway’s portraits of her children, I think I might start to believe in magic. Of course, she’s got 10 children*, so I guess she needs to do something for fun. I assume they all live in a big shoe. Hey, depending on the shoe, I could definitely get talked into that!
(*During his live radio show, “You Bet Your Life,” Groucho Marx expressed surprise on learning that a woman had a large number of children. The woman replied, “I love my husband.” Without missing a beat, my hero Groucho responded, “Lady, I love my cigar, but I take it out once in a while!”)
A well-known and very successful photographer of children and families, Holloway decided to “made the hard decision to not take client sessions at the current time in an effort to free up more time for her children.” So now she photographs only her own children, with tremendous results. I could try and say intelligent things about color and light but 1. I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, and 2. the pictures speak for themselves.
Note: I believe all the children pictured are Lisa’s with the exception of Mia, the red head. Her photos were so striking, I just couldn’t leave her out.

What do I think? I think Lisa Holloway takes very, very good photos of her children.

These are breathtaking. I love the colours and lighting. Just one question (rhetorical though it may be): How the hell does one carry and birth, let alone raise, 10 children? My word.

Very, very carefully. I have a very prolific aunt (she had 11!) who managed it with great good humor and grace, but it takes a rare person to be able to pull it off. Not to mention the terrible toll it would take on your body!

By the way, I owe you thanks. Your comment on the number of children she has reminded me that I neglected to include in the post my favorite Groucho Marx story. Omission corrected!

The images are absolutely gorgeous–my favorite one being the picture of her daughter with a fawn.
Also, the Paul Caponigro quote ‘hits it out of the park.’
Thank you.

It doesn’t hurt that she’s got quite a number of remarkable-looking children, but the photos are exceptional.
