What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

The Sad Oenophile Penguin

Oleg Borodin created The Penguin entirely by accident. At least that’s the way he tells it. He was intending to draw an illustration for a children’s book, but the penguin he drew seemed so adult and so depressed, that he decided to keep him for himself. But he didn’t want his little creation to be alone.

“I decided he needed a friend – one who would always be by his side. I love wine, so a red bottle appeared almost unconsciously.”

The “relationship” started as a series of postcards. He eventually started creating full-size works of art. He hasn’t yet started making illustrated books, but I’m hopeful.

  2. They are excellent. Particularly the one with the picture of Mao on the wall very funny in a dry sort of way. The one with the IV bottle of red is a nurses version of heaven.
    Lovely post.

  5. I totally would’ve bought the postcards. This is what makes genius art – simple, geometric forms and sharp color contrast. Cute characters don’t hurt, either.

  7. How have I not seen this before? Poor little penguin–he could always be a sommelier–he is an oenophile in a permanent tuxedo after all.

  8. There is something slightly twisted and yet endearing about these that I truly enjoy.
