Medieval Bangers

Courseval

Did you know that bardcore was a thing? I didn’t until I stumbled upon the French musical group known as Courseval. These very talented musicians rearrange modern pop and rock songs into more or less medieval-styled music, and it’s strangely compelling. I think I may have talked before about an assignment I got in high school music class. We were to take a song of any kind and change the genre. I turned Dueling Banjoes into a classical guitar piece, and it was surprisingly successful. My teacher loved it, and while I have mostly forgotten everything I knew on guitar, this one thing sticks with me. There’s just something compelling about re-hearing a well-worn piece of music in a new way. And that’s what Courseval does best.

When they sing, Courseval performs their songs in French, which adds to the appeal for me. Because my French is high school level at best, the fact that the songs are not in English add to the mystique. What can I say? I am a simple creature. I also really enjoy their medieval costumes and instruments. They’re not going to win a Grammy,, but Courseval is definitely a fun diversion.

You can follow Courseval on their website and on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Spotify, and Facebook.
