There is a pop artist based in London named Boyarde Messenger, and her work is just fascinating! She is known for painting on everything from the female body to Hermes Birkin bags. Her motto is “I paint on everything but paper.” I am less interested in her posterior work than I am in her painting of luxury goods. It’s such a ballsy thing to do. You’d have to have complete confidence in your ability. To prevent the paint from flaking or chipping off, she works with Angelus Shoe Polish, which is specifically intended to paint on leather and vinyl.
Messenger’s favorite themes are old Hollywood and ’40s and ’50s film noir, though her subjects vary wildly. She doesn’t favor one style of art in particular, but there are strong elements of pop art storytelling in all her work.
You can follow Boyarde Messenger on the Boyarde Art House website and on YouTube, Instagram (here and here), and Facebook.
