Whale Song

I typically reserve Wednesdays for music discoveries, but today’s is a little different. Bear with me.

Although I can’t afford 95% of what they sell, I am nonetheless a big fan of the innovative products sold by Hammacher Schlemmer. A while back, I wrote about the Hootenany, a kind of one-man-band-in-a-box. Today, I’m bringing you another musical instrument, but this is something even more special (and much more useful). It’s a digital piano, but on a scale (see what I did there?) you’ve never imagined.

This is the Orcinus Orchestral Digital Grand Piano, an instrument whose sleek lines are inspired by the Orcinus orca. Yes, a whale. Sounds gimmicky and awkward, right? Wrong. It looks and sounds gorgeous, and it makes me desperately want to get piano lessons (and a sizeable bucket of money) immediately.

” Handmade in the United Kingdom to suit individual preference—from the polish of the exterior to the upholstery of the matching seat—each is crafted using components from German concerns Kluge and Renner, providers of the world’s best piano mechanics. This piano greets players with 88 Ivoplast and ebony keys to provide the same balanced hammer action as a concert grand, while beneath its dorsal fin-like lid, a world-leading 500-tone Roland audio processor suffuses each note with realistic acoustic character and nuance that only the truly perspicacious performer can discern is digitally modeled.” -Hammacher Schlemmer YouTube Channel

Happily, you can get it in any color you want. I would hope so. For $105K, I would think it would come with private piano lessons by Richard Joo.

  1. Did you notice she even had the wind blowing on her? (Sold separately.)
