This is the music video for Overcome by UK soul singer Laura Mvula. I like the song and I enjoy her voice, but it’s really the video that grabbed and held me. Like the gorgeous Mvula herself, it’s all in shades of black and brown and gold, and it looks incredibly luxe and magnificently textured. I want to spend some time in that world!
Alex Southam directed the video. He describes it as a series of “active paintings with gold accents and beautiful brown bodies in motion.” Mission accomplished!

The song itself I could take or leave. It’s pleasant enough and I’d happily listen to it as background music but it’s probably too repetitive for my taste. The video, however, is exquisite. I loved the splashes of gold and the texture of the floor when they were lying on it, like black liquid. I also thought the choreography was great.

If I can’t give the day’s posts five stars, I give it nothing. That’s just me. Maybe it is because I am 76 years, this just is not my kind of music. But, I did give it a like for the concept. if I want sexy and music, give me Madonna, Spears, Cher, etc. i have only been to one live concert and it was Cher. But when I first got married about 50 year the ‘Sonny and Cher’ show was the one show we waited all week for. She is still going on today and so is her mother. Currently/new singers give me Adele. I grew up with classical music and I still spend most of my listening to them. Harold

Sonny and Cher was fantastic. It made a big impression on me as a kid. Thank you, Harold, for your thoughtful comment!

I was really taken with the video after watching it on my laptop, then I decided to watch it on a large screen. Amazing! Song is not my fave, for sure, but that video!
