What if you spent every day looking for One Beautiful Thing?

Skeleton House

Steven Dinote

Steven and Danielle Dinote are known in their hometown of San Antonio as the house with the most Halloween holiday spirit. Starting on October 1 every year, the couple and their children do a new skeleton scene on their front lawn EVERY DAY. Can you imagine that level of commitment? Steven says it all started during the pandemic. The family bought a number of fake skeletons to decorate their lawn for Halloween, but every day, someone in the house came up with a change. At first, the overnight changes were small, but as their skeletal tableau started to get noticed by the neighborhood, the displays got more innovative (and complicated).

The Dinotes say they spend between 30 and 60 minutes per day to set each scene, but some of these must have taken way longer. The ideas come from all of the household members plus neighbors and now suggestions on social media, too.

You can check out the Skeleton House of San Antonio on Instagram and Facebook.

I am in awe of their creativity and endurance. Coming up with an idea for a skeleton tableau annually would be quite enough for me but coming up with an idea daily would be so taxing. I am glad they are crowd sourcing ideas to alleviate some of that pressure. While this is not something I would ever embark on, it would definitely be so much fun to have neighbours that did this.

I agree, but I think you’re selling yourself a bit short. I’m always amazed by how much art you create. I imagine if tableaux were your thing, you’d be equal to the daily vignette task.

Thank you. I think I am motivated by some types of creativity while others become chores. My kids received Elf on the Shelf when we first emigrated and I really sucked at coming up with daily ideas for that blasted elf. I usually just hid it somewhere with zero creativity involved. I was so happy when my kids outgrew it. These skeleton vignettes remind me a lot of that – albeit with a subject that holds much more appeal to me – so I know I would start strong and then fizzle out before seeing it as a chore.

I find that sometimes, having an audience helps me with motivation. There have been days when I don’t feel like writing, but knowing I have readers expecting something always knocks me out of my funk.
